Hello, Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. I am sorry that I am not fully clear on the whole story. I will share the following thoughts that may help -- First, rodent nests and potential damage from rodent intrusion leaves lots of questions - and it's hard to know if damage is contributing to the problems you are experiencing. Second, when I hear "lack of power" concerns, I immediately think air flow restriction or exhaust restriction. Your exhaust rattle makes me think that exhaust baffles in your catalytic converter or muffler could be restricting exhaust flow. This is just a guess, and requires disconnecting the components from the engine to see if it improves performance. Check the air intake for restrictions. Smelling fuel when the vehicle is running is also a possible indication of rich running - meaning not enough air flow or poor exhaust flow. Might be a great idea to consult a professional near you.
