Lowbeam headlight keeps shorting. Appears as common wiring harness issue. Any recalls?

There is no recall or even technical service bulletin regarding a problem. Does one or both light bulb blow? Could it be water or moisture entering the headlamp causing the bulb to blow. The wiring diagram shows fuse #17 (20 Amp fuse) protecting high and low light right side and fuse #15 (20 amp fuse) protecting high and low light . It would be interesting to put an amp meter in series where that fuse is and see if each circuit draws the same amount of current on high and then low beam. There are two relays in the circuit and the light switch any of which I suppose could also give problems. But the answer to you question is no recalls. I work on quite a few of these and haven't seen a problem.
I know what your talking about. I haven't verified that this is the issue with my '05 CR-V yet...will let ya know but a few days ago while driving home in rush hr traffic on a highway both my lowbeams quit. Thnk goodness the highbeams were still functioning. I doubt its the bulbs and both would go at the same time like that but I can't say yet for sure. However I did find a recall for a Honda Civic and a few others (not CR-Vs w/ that same issue). Here's one below: 2002 Honda CIVIC Recall ID from NHTSA: 04V086000 Auto Recall Date: 02/24/2004 Vehicle Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS Estimated Vehicles Affected: 440000 2002 HONDA CIVIC Defect Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE LOW-BEAM TERMINAL ON THE HEAD LIGHT WIRE HARNESS CAN OVERHEAT AND COULD CAUSE THE LOW BEAMS TO FAIL WITHOUT WARNING. Defect Consequence: AN UNEXPECTED LOSS OF LOW BEAMS COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HEAD LIGHT SWITCH AND COUPLER FOR SIGNS OF HEAT DAMAGE. IF HEAT DAMAGE IS PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE SWITCH AND COUPLER. IF NO HEAT DAMAGE IS PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE HEAD LIGHT SWITCH AND ONE MATING PIN IN THE COUPLER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON APRIL 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009. Notes: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.), P23
I created a NHTSA complaint for the 06 CRV piggybacking off your issue, it is complaint 11457574. Both my low beams went out within a week and there is burn damage on the connectors. I typically replace one every few months, but both being out at the same time is new.
I just had the same problem on my 2002 CR-V and was able to trace it to a plug/socket in the steering column. The plug is on top of the column under the plastic housing. When I unplugged it the melted plastic and burned connector left no question that the connection had overheated. A number of other sites on the web have comments from others who have had this same thing occur with 2002 to 2006 models (possibly others). Depending on the extent of the damage it may be possible to clean the terminals but in my case I will need to replace the plug and socket. I reported it to Honda and they had no information about this particular problem. The NHTSA had only one other report of this occurring in their files for the 2002 model year. If you have this same problem I would recommend that you put it on file with them. Their phone number is 888-327-4236.
