Radio screen is black.Can play CD's, load and eject no radio functions

I ran out of gas one day recently. After filling and restarting the radio screen went black. I could not switch modes. I could listen to the CD player and could load/eject CD's but could switch to radio, could not see the screen at all and could not skip songs in CD mode.I disconnected the battery and all functions came back but then randomly went black again with only limited CD functions. Can i trouble shoot this myself or do I have to take it in? Any ideas?
