There is a clacking noise that is coming from the front end of my volvo, especially when I accelerate. The mechanics thought it might be the main bearing, but they really couldn't tell. Is that a common problem with this make and model?

The mechanics also found metal shavings in the motor... the car runs perfectly. The noise is just a little nerve racking.
What makes this problem better or worse?
accelerating. As soon as I let off the gas, the noise stops, however, I can hear a very muted version of it when the car is idling.
