vehicle shutdown while driving and wont start for hours, then restarts and runs

First let me add this.... I cut my car off, it was cold that day. Snow was on the ground. I had been sitting 5 minutes waiting for someone. I had it towed to the shop, that I usually go, (But the first time with my volvo) I was told they put a new starter on my volvo. It never happened again.But a two months ago that happened to me out of nowhere driving on the NJ turnpike. It started up after about ten minutes,and I drove NOT even half a mile to the gas station. In which I sat debating on whether to call AAA. It started back up. The entire time there it kept cutting off. It got me back to Philly and to the volvo shop and I ended up having to pay 800$ to have my exhaust system cleaned out. But my volvo is a 2004 XC90 turbo. Hope that helps!
