There are a couple causes for this symptom. The most common is a blown fuse for the brake lights. There are 2 fuses, one fuse is in the fuse box in the passenger compartment on the left side of the dash. It will be a 10A fuse in slot 21. The other fuse is in the engine compartment fuse box (on the drivers side), check the 5A fuse in slot 12. If both of these fuses are OK and the brake lights operate, there is likely a mechanical problem in the shifter itself. Usually it is the shifter handle itself that breaks internally.
