The warning 'low oil' came on. No one seems to know where the oil went to.

I have a 2011 XC60. After the check oil light came on I added 1.5 qt of oil and got it to the Volvo dealer. Needed all pistons, rings and seals replaced...plus other stuff. Dealer said all new parts are upgrades. The vehicle has less than 40,000 miles on it, and all regular maintenance and oil/filter changes were done on schedule by dealer and it never lost any oil between changes til this failure.

Chances are, if you have no external leaks, and the engine isn't burning the oil (as evidenced by copius amounts of blue smoke billowing behind the car when driving), then its time to look at your last oil change and who performed it for you. Did they fill your engine with the correct weight and quantity of oil?

I would agree with answer 1. If you are not leaking oil and there is no evidence of the engine using excessive oil then you may have been low all along and witht the normal consumption of oil that occures in an engine the level could now be below the threshold to turn the "Low Oil" light on. I have a new 2011 xc60 with 7500 miles so it is due for first oil change. Yesterday oil low light came on. I stopped at first service station to find that I was at the minimum level of oil. I know the oil level was okay before so it has suddenly started burning or loosing oil.
