Volvo V50 (2005) front suspension strut top bearing alignment

What is your question?

I have replaced my front strut assemblies; new struts, springs, bearing carriers and bearings. The bearing carrier has an identification peg. Can anyone tell me in which direction that peg should point please? There were no instructions with the new part and "the book" says "be careful to replace it with the alignment peg positioned as it was when you dismantled it". I am not sure that the old one was right before I dismantled it. Steering is now weird, it does not want to self-centre at slow speed. Thank you.
