Replaced transmission fluid and filter found a piece of band belt

Found a piece of a band belt in transmission fluid/filter change. Car only goes into gears gears downhill starting in 2nd. Going uphill loses all gears. Reverse is only gear that works from start up.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Going downhill hill picks up all gears going uphill loses all gears
