My volvo clunks loudly when accelerating over expansion joints, bumps, etc. Louder when car is not warmed up and when rebounding up after bumps. I have noticed about 1/2 inch space between large round washer on top of strut and mount plate. Is this normal? HELP! I did all of the 105k maintenance listed in book {very expensive} and still it clunks.

Did they replace the strut bearing plates? they run about $70 to $90 each at Napa Auto Parts http://partimages.genpt.com/largeimages/687058.jpg
The gap is normal, but the upper plates should be checked, like hemi said. Have the sway bar link rods checked, and the ball joints too.
