Hi, What estimate are you referring to? Let me know and I'll look into this for you so I can answer your question.
He is saying replacing timing chain or belt, water pump and a few other parts, what you suppose to do to a car when it has to be done to keep pistons from bending. The labor is only #200 rest is Volvo parts
I'm thinking your looking at the timing belt replacement, is that right? Well, I'm going to go on that assumption, you can tell me if I'm wrong. We quote for the timing belt replacement only, which is almost 2 hours plus the timing belt part. It's likely your mechanic is replacing the tensioner and idler pulleys, and maybe the water pump. I still don't see this costing $900, but let me know what parts they are quoting and I'll look into it for you.
These are dealer prices - Timing Belt: $60.00 Tensioner: $100.00 Idler Pulley: $70.00 Water Pump: $145.00 Coolant: $25.00 So with the $200 in labor, plus around $400 - $450 in parts, you get $600 - $650. They may be adding a drive belt and thermostat plus adding taxes, but it still isn't adding up to $900.00. One thing I do agree with, and that is your mechanic is correct in replacing all these parts.
