Yes and yes. Once you remove the axle ends from the hubs, then the axles pop out of the transmission, sometimes it take a quick pop with a big pry bar though. And yes, a bad axle will cause vibration on acceleration. Be sure to check the motor mounts though, especially the one at the front of the motor.
