Can I exchange shifter assemblies?

What is your question?

I have a 1992 740 wagon that i broke the shifter assembly trying to replace the solenoid. I can find 1994 940 wagon replacements all day but they are different in a handful of ways. Will it work for my application if I change everything?

No, this is not an applicable swap.

What would prevent the swap? The engine and trans are the same, and the shifter is virtually the same except for the housing of the gear indicator. Not arguing just wondering what the exact issue would be.
