What is your question?
Hello, I have a volkswagen tiguan 2018 tsi 2.0t, recently I ran out of gas and on my way to get gas the car ran out and shook and turned off, I put some gas in it and then the car started and it started shaking and the rpm would come down and up and suddenly the car would turn off, I called a towing truck and I took the car to a mechanic where he said the problem was a cracked piston due to the dirty debris from no gas and it broke the piston (i wasn’t there when he got the pistons out, he just showed me a “cracked piston”), he opened the engine and got it out and replaced the piston, after just two days the same thing happened again, I will start the car after 10 seconds the car engine will shake and make knocking noises and the rpm will go down and up and the car will turn off, I heard somewhere it might be a MAF sensor issue, the mechanic didn’t mention it, but whenever I unplug the sensor the car works fine it doesn’t shake or knock or turn off, Can you please help me ?
What makes this problem better or worse?
it’s starts when the car is idle and works fine without the MAF sensor
How long has your 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan had this problem?
2 weeks

Hello, I would suggest that it's highly unusual for a technician in most repair shops to "remove a piston" and then replace it in the repair shop. Sure, it can happen, but I find it unusual -- and - I would imagine a cracked piston could also leave debris and damage the cylinder walls of the related cylinder. It all kind of sound suspect to me, but I hate to doubt repair professionals. If you run out of gas, It can definitely cause drivability problems with engine performance until things sort out. If you've verified disconnecting the MAF sensor prevents the problem from occurring - then you are confirming that there is no base engine issue that requires repairs, just engine performance control issues of fuel and air mixtures. Troubleshooting is needed to determine what is happening. I'd suggest a different shop provide an opinion. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me Click the link or call us at 877-913-1554. Hi, my name is Devin. I am an auto repair expert with the Car Genius team here at RepairPal. So sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Tiguan. Based on what you've described, the symptoms you're experiencing could indeed be related to the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. When a MAF sensor is faulty or dirty, it can cause the engine to run poorly by sending incorrect information to the engine's computer, leading to rough idling or stalling. The fact that your car runs better with the MAF sensor unplugged suggests it might be malfunctioning. You might want to clean or replace the MAF sensor to see if it resolves the issue since driving the car with the sensor unplugged is not optimal.
