Why won't the gear engage when shifted? Have to kill engine and restart at times

This happens intermittently - the check engine light will come on then go off shortly after. Also getting a "steering wheel lock defect" error half the time when I start my car.

Hello, A very common problem with VW Passat is the steering wheel lock issue. The ignition switch, brake pedal, and gear selector work together, making it entirely possible for the transmission control module to disable the transmission when it thinks the steering wheel is locked. Never seen it, but these have a chance of being related.
