sounds like the shift cable came loose from the transmission shift lever. this will show that the transmission is in a gear but the shifter isn't really moving. Check out under the hood follow cable to shift lever have someone move the shifter without the car running see if the lever moves. if the cable moves but not the lever repair by attaching the cable to the lever. if the cable isn't moving it is broken replace the cable. If the cable and lever are moving together you may have internal transmission problem.
