i have to replace my alternator. should they replace the timing belt as well.

If you plan on keeping the car long term it may save a a duplication of labor to do the timing belt now. I hate it when simple repairs become so intensive (poor design) but when you can save labor down the road you may be better of doing the timing belt now.
