If car check engine light says timing belt and you fix that, how can they come back and say we think tension

Fixed timing belt because check engine light was on and was told the reading was the timing belt. Now check engine light is still on and they think now it's the tension and pulley. How can I trust that I am not being scammed? 2001 VW psaat only 56000 miles.
