When changing the front lower control arm do you need to compress the struts/spring?

The front spring is trapped and stays in place when replacing the lower control arm. The front strut has a U shaped bracket at the bottom of it bolt going through it. The inner control arm bushing has a bolt going through it. Remove the outer ball joint nut and sway bar outer link. The bushing are replaceable from VW, an American company named Moog may have a replaceable complete arm.
as above and it can be a pain getting the balljoint to pop out, i brought a special vw tool from ebay for about $60 shipped made it a breeze on both sides you need it to be 28mm oprning most balljoint tools arent wide enough
