how do you get driver side door panel off.

You've got a lot to do even after you remove the door panel. There are a couple of screws near the interior handle that have to be removed. They are usually behind plastic covers. Check the bottom of the panel for additional screws. When they're all removed gently pry the bottom loose and the 10 or so plastic clips will will begin to release. Several of these will break and need to be replaced. The window regulator that broke is very difficult to remove. Take pictures for later reference when reassembling.
