Why does transmission slip when it catches btwn 1/2 and 2/3 catches REALLY hard

It sounds like the tranny disengages from the motor and rpm's go up until I let off of accelerator.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Being heavy footed when accelerating

Low fluid would definitely cause this. Check your trans fluid level first. Alex
