Yes, this can be a difficult job. If your quite mechanically inclined and have a good amount of tools it's doable, but I would get a good repair manual and read up on the job first before attempting this repair. If this water pump is driven by the timing belt, or the timing belt is removed to replace the water pump, then replace the timing belt and tensioner as well.
