Hello, the root cause must be discovered. There is obviously power being applied to the box where it shouldn't be. I would guess there's more to the story -- any abnormal circumstances over the years with this vehicle? Any aftermarket non-VW components tapped into the wiring? Any devices that were not supplied from VW from the factory? Usually an un-touched factory system does not exhibit problems. So, it's good to start with known "variables".
