I thought it could be out of gas so I got some gas and then it started and died and wouldn't start again. The battery is fully charged, it turns over but will not start. I have replaced the spark plugs already. What should I look into next? maybe the fuel pump or filter? should I start with the fuel filter and then go to pump if that doesn't solve the problem. It is a 1989 but there was no selection for that year.

Check to see if you have spark, check to see if the timing belt is turning properly by looking through the oil cap and cranking the engine or removing the distributor cap and watching the rotor turn. If you spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body, that can act as a fuel substitute and if the car fires up for a little and then dies, then you have a fuel delivery problem i.e worn out fuel pump, fuel pump relay etc. here are some shops: https://repairpal.com/volkswagen-repair-in-cottage-grove-oregon
I am not sure if the 90 is the same as the 92, but I have a 92 and the seat belt that goes accross your shoulder that attaches to the door has to be in all the way. If it is not hooked up the car won't start. This is also true for the clutch (I don't know if you drive stick). Check the seat belt attacher to the door, and make sure the rug is not under the clutch.
My car seems to have the same problem, it swings, but with a bit of difficulty and also just won't start.after a long time of trying to start it, it eventually only made a clicking sound, and wouldn't swing anymore, had my starter replaced so now it swings again, but still won't start. My car has been very low on petrol and I ran out once, not so long ago. Is it possible that the filter could be clogged? Any idea?
