My Volkswagen Eos keeps clicking off at gas pump before the gas tank is filled

I have a 2007 Volkswagen Eos, 126k miles. This has happened the past 3 times i have filled the tank. They have to place the nozzle upside down for it to work. Sometimes even while holding it, it clicks off.

What makes this problem better or worse?
