There could be water in the tank after sitting a year. Draining the gas and replacing the fuel filter is a great idea, but you need to figure what to do with the old fuel. Maybe ask at a motor shop if they'll take it (and maybe a 6-pack) off your hands. Get some fuel system cleaner from the auto parts store and put that in the tank before you put in some fresh gas. Hopefully that's all that's wrong and the car is fixed.
