Why is my check engine light on and no codes coming up?

Took car to 3 different shops and had defaults codes scanned no came up but engine light is on. Can't go thru emissions testing with it on.

There are codes stored. You can not obtain those codes by a small code reader. You need to get a coder scanner that will read all your systems such as your transmission DTC, ABS DTC and so forth....
