I have a a 2002 Voltswagen Beetle it won't crank or start. I have a EPC and ABS code showing on dash also foot peddle code on gearshift. What could be the problem?

It's a 1.8 L with 166,000 miles. It had started making a grinding noise while started and I'd move the steering column to a different position and it would stop also I was having problems shifting it into gear. I'm not sure if one, none, or both are the problem. I have no way to pinpoint or narrow down the issue. I am stranded at home and really don't have any tools does anybody have any suggestions of what it could be? I should probably mention that the day it finally died I drove through a puddle of water and had to have it pulled home.
