Just bought 01 vw. Put oil in it but still rattles. Is motor toast?

I just bought an 01 beetle for 200 us dollars. Previous owner ran it out of oil. I filled it with oil and drove it home. Engine is rattling and sometimes dies when I come to a stop. Still has plenty of power though. Im just wondering where to begin with trying to fix it or new engine altogether.
