oil light came on how low is the oil when the light comes on

The oil pressure light comes on when the oil pressure drops below as low as 5 or 7psi. If the car is driven with the oil light on damage to the bearings can occur. It is an oil pressure not an oil level light, will normally indicate maybe less than a quart of oil is in the engine either due to the engine burning or leaking oil. I would suggest changing the oil every 3,000 miles. If the oil level in the engine is above the minimum level it could just be a defective oil pressure switch.
