What is your question?
VW dealer replaced numerous parts on our 1998 VW gas engine beetle including mass flow air sensor. The engine starts and runs great 95% of the time and then all of sudden it simply stalls out at idle while waiting at a stop light. I am able to immediately restart the car and usually the problem just goes away for a week or so and then it happens again. What would cause this sporadic engine shutoff at idle only, never while the car is driven at higher speeds. Please help asap!
How long has your 1998 Volkswagen Beetle had this problem?
We replaced the engine with a rebuilt engine a year ago and have had the problem since

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! When your engine stalls at idle but starts right back up, it’s like dealing with a finicky cat—you never know when it’ll decide to act up! Since you’ve had parts replaced, the problem might be with something that affects idle control, like the idle air control valve or throttle body. These parts help regulate airflow when the engine is idling. If they’re dirty or malfunctioning, they can cause random stalling. It’s also worth checking for vacuum leaks, as even a tiny one can disrupt idle stability. Since you mentioned the problem started after the engine replacement, double-check all the connections and grounds from that job. Sometimes, the little things can be the culprits!
