What is your question?
It is very intermittent, but sometimes I accelerate and the car doesn't respond -- as if it's in neutral -- and then after a second or two it kicks into gear and moves. Getting more frequent...and check engine light has just come on.

Diagnostic codes are stored in the vehicle's computer and can be retrieved using a scantool that communicates with the computer in your car. We have in our Repairpal website an encyclopedia with in depth articles about computer, and computer control systems, emission and driveability problems. http://repairpal.com/check-engine-light There is a 16 pin diagnostic socket under the driver's side of the dash. AAMCO and Autozone advertise they will check the codes for free.
Many times low transmission fluid levels can cause a vehicle to temporarily fall out of gear. Usually it will happen more frequently after the car has sat overnight, especially when first taking off. The check engine light means the computer has registered trouble codes which may point you in the right direction, but they need to be scanned to see what they are. Let us know what the codes are or come by and we can check them, but before you go anywhere check your transmission fluid level/ smell to see if it's burnt. Many thanks Patrick. How do I retrieve these codes and how would I know what they mean? Does this require special equipment? I keep reading about ox sensors and converters going bad -- could these be doing this? Also when you talk about oil levels and refilling oil --do you mean transmission fluid? and is the filter an oil filter? how would that help the transmission?
