having an intermittent noise coming from behind or beneath dash

happened on startup most often, but has happened while driving, does't last long enough to get a good fix on exactly where it's emanating from , seems more central, leaning toward drivers side. the one time it happened to me while driving it didn't appear to affect performance or trigger any lights. any suggestions? thanks
