Think timing belt is shot. Need confirm before buying parts (yeah I can fix it)
What is your question?
The other night while driving it I heard this horrible metal scraping sound and ever since then every time I start it it immediately dies I cannot keep it running.....
RepairPal Certified shops can diagnose and repair your 2001 Toyota Sienna. They provide transparent pricing with a minimum 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on repairs and services.
The engine won't even start if the timing belt is broken. That said, I'd probably do a partial tear down of the timing cover and valve cover to see what you can see.
Thank God for you answering
.. so the timing belt thing is fine. I took it apart and it's at least in one piece.
That said, I keep thinking back to the 1-2 hours prior to it dying. I had that REALLY LOUD SCRAPING sound like I was dragging a huge pile of metal around for about 20 seconds.... just prior to that it bogged down (going 75mph) like there was water in fuel line (or sumin like that)
I'm in dire straights here.
I was reading where it might be IAC? Problem with that is I wouldn't even know what to do with it if I found it. Again... I can fix anything if I Google (and harass unsuspecting forum folks like yourself). I'm a nurse practitioner so this is far from my forte....... Lol
Oh yeah.... code came up 02 sensor awhile back but those were replaced.
Any help at this point is very very very very much appreciated.
Thanks so much again!
Hello, anything that would make such a catastrophic sounding noise, following by the vehicle dying sounds like a mechanical concern. Could be in the top or bottom of the engine. Could be one of the accessories driven by the drive belt locked up. Lots of guessing without a hands on diagnosis. Take the drive belt off and see if the engine starts without it on. That' would eliminate all the pulleys on the engine as possible causes.
