AC works but not immediately, what would cause that?

I start the engine, the ac is typically on the ON position. lately, the AC shows as if it is on but no air comes out after a couple of minutes the lights turn off on the AC controls and then I can wait a couple of more minutes and turn on the AC and it comes back online with no issues. This happens everytime I start the car up, doesn't matter if it is sitting around 30 minutes or even 1 minute.
