I now have a thumping noise in the front after having the tires rotated.

What is your question?

The suggestion is to fix the wheel bearings. Wouldn't the noise have been there before if it was the bearings ?

Have them check for uneven tire wear maybe a flat spot or cupping. since the tires were on the rear prior to service u wouldn't have noticed the thump. Are you having any vibrations in the steering wheel?& if so does it get worst at acceleration?
