Reverse just stop working all in a sudden. In neutral it still drives forward

Hi! This is Bo with Car Genius at RepairPal! Uh oh! It's never good to go backward in life...unless you're trying to reverse! The sudden loss of reverse could be due to several possible causes. It might be an issue with a faulty solenoid, valve body, or internal mechanical failure in the transmission. It could also be related to the transmission fluid level or condition, so it's worth checking the fluid level and inspecting it for signs of contamination or overheating. It will be black in color and smell burnt if it becomes too thin and loses its viscosity. If that's the case you could try doing a complete transmission fluid exchange. Additionally, problems with the transmission linkage or shift cable could prevent engagement of the reverse gear. Since the vehicle still drives forward in neutral, it's less likely to be a problem with the drivetrain or engine. If you have any other questions feel free to call us at 877-913-1554!
