What is your question?
I just had a detailed inspection on my 2001 Toyota Sequoia, 164,000 miles, SR5. The top things they are recommending I get replaced are the drive belt, the valve gasket covers (although I see no drips in my driveway) and the suspension linkage. They are also recommending replacing the front and back shocks (bushings are tearing and rear shocks are leaking.) Spark plug, air filter, trans fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid replacements. This sounds like A LOT of money. Is there an economical order to have these items replaced? I can do the air filter and spark plugs, but the rest is out of my league. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much. Sara

Sounds like a bunch of things building up due to age and maintenance needs. The repair facility should be able to list things in order of "need" versus "recommend" versus "performance upgrade". Being that they have seen your Toyota they should be in the best position to advise this. Questions I would have -- How old is your drive belt? At 20 years old it can't be original. If somehow it is, that's first. Valve covers need to be assessed as to severity of the leak. Scale of 1-5 where 1 is seeping and 5 is pouring out -- what is it? That would answer that question for me -- 1 or 2 would be "wait" and 3-5 would be "fix".. Suspension linkage - what does that mean? Shock absorbers are a performance upgrade -- not a bad investment but not often a "car down safety issue". "Bushings are tearing" - which bushings? And yeah, in 20 years, rubber dry rots. Again, not something I'd consider an "emergency" but a definite "recommend". Spark plugs should be done every 100,000 miles minimum. When were they done last? Air filter - every 15,000 miles or so - when done last? Power steering fluid - NOT a published maintenance item. Not a bad idea, but not a safety or immediate issue. Brake fluid - every 2-3 years -- when done last? Don't be so sure you can do the spark plugs -- might be best left to professionals. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops
