why won't a store dash mounted compass work in my 2013 rav-4.

I bought the 2013 RAV-4 new. It didn't come with a COMPASS. I thought I would pick up one up at PEP-BOYS. They didn't work. I sent away for different compasses..... NO-LUCK. The guy at the DEALERSHIP was no help. What do you recommend ? Thank You Mr. Munz
