clutch replacement

Everytime i changed gear the motor started racing and finaly my car died on the katy freeway, I was told that the cluctch gave out and should be replaced, what would be a fair price to repair, I already had it done as I cannot be without a car but the price was very high, I wonder if I got gouged.
