hello!my '96 rav4 no longer starts after sitting on driveway for 3-4 months

hello again!!! anyway, every year for the last 3 years my rav would startup while boosting the battery.this is the first time the rav would not start;engine would crank not start.my rav was towed to my bro-in-laws mechanic;initially he said its the timing belt,however,i told him if timing belt can break after 2years since being replaced.mechanic investigated further and he says engine is no good.i know my rav4 is old with 275,000miles,but it has never let me down... do you guys think there are other things to check? thanks in advance for your assistance
