What is your question?
Our 2013 Prius with 35000 miles had a warning light come on and we immediately pulled off the freeway and stopped. After towing it to Toyota we were told that the coolant leaked into the engine and it would need the engine replaced. Toyota first gave us a quote of $6000 then after starting the work called 2 and a half weeks later and said it would be $12000.
What makes this problem better or worse?
The engine failed after coolant leveled into it.
How long has your 2013 Toyota Prius had this problem?
While driving on the freeway a warning light came on and we immediately pulled off and had the car towed

Hello, first, I would appeal to Toyota for assistance, as the work is underway, and you appear to be at the mercy of the dealership. Also, in California, you have rights overseen by the Bureau of Automotive Repair regarding an estimate change like that. It seems kind of unacceptable that this estimate change occurred. But before that, it seems unreasonable that a 7 year old vehicle would be left without assistance by Toyota. Seek help with the service manager, general manager, or Toyota themselves. Most shops in the field are not equipped to "rebuild" an engine. You'll be installing a new or rebuilt engine block - short or long, not having the engine rebuilt for you.
