Can I keep driving on the gas engine when the large battery shows empty?

Hello, Once the high voltage battery is depleted, the vehicle will not start and run, and the 12-volt battery will not be able to charge either. This could be a failure of the battery to accept a charge, or another failure in the hybrid drive system. I would recommend this be diagnosed sooner rather than later.
