what is the cost to replace the RKE receiver for the FOB on Prius 2005

I had my FOB completely stop working for a month & then it started working again. I also do not have an alarm system any longer & the horn doesn't sound when I press the horn button on the FOB. The buttons to unlock the doors are not operational either.
Do you feel that a backyard mechanic could replace this? Do I have to program the Receiver?
If I can not do the work myself how much would the dealer charge me to do this repair?

First, the receiver for the key fob may need a program, but most times they do not. Many brands even use the antenna for the radio to unlock/lock the doors.
Next, I would never take a 2005 model to the dealership. For this repair, you don't even need a hybrid certified technician, just choose someone with a great track record at a certified shop.
Finally, I think a good backyard mechanic is great for things like suspension work, coolant leaks, and many other purely mechanical job, but you really should seek a technician to take care of technical matters. You really want to see that ASE badge to know that they understand how to handle your vehicle without damaging the various electronic systems.
You could conceivable replace it, but the part costs about $400. It is located near the fuel door behind the panel in the trunk area.
Just know that if programming is needed it may trigger the immobilizer.
