My steering wheel sometimes shakes violently. How urgent is this?

A few times recently after starting my car the steering wheel shakes violently until I turn off the ignition. It may be related to turning in reverse, then turning the wheel the other way to go forward. Then it starts the shaking. After I turn off the ignition and restart the car I've had no problems. The dealership repair shop is backed up for a number of days. What could this be and is it safe to drive until I can get it looked at?
