rattling on turning right

96 2.2td Awd, Automatic Diesel, Since yesterday once engine warms up on turning right we get this really loud rattling banging noise and in certain circumstances the engine cuts out, when the engine is restarted we get a lot of grey/ black smoke out of the exhaust, nothing underneath is loose or worn steering rack and such , the car still has good power and no loss of power at all except when the engine cuts out, we have tried all kinds to work out whats doing it, all we can think of now is maybe the front Differential please can anyone give us any ideas
