i had friend recharge it once with r134 i think,(i bought from the auto store)... now i have another friend telling me that this system is an r12 system and that it needs to be flushed out but it seems that not just anybody can buy r12 freon???

Buy The r1234 freon with lubrication. Go to autozone and they will show you how to do it urself.
R134 is fine. It doesn't cool as well but barely noticeable. It is also a LOT cheaper and safer for the environment. You have to be certified to get R12. The R12 should have been flushed out with a vacuum put on it to remove it all and remove any moisture. Then the R134 put in. I have done this to a few cars without putting a vacuum on it and had no problems.
