What is your question?
I have a base 2009 Toyota Matrix and I've been getting the check engine code P0420 "Catalyst System Efficiency Below threshold bank 1" on and off for the past 6 months. I've had my oxygen sensors replaced and have ran some catalytic cleaner but the check engine light has been on for the past month. My mechanic offered a solution of purchasing a 3rd party catalytic converter and he'll install it for $300 CAD to save some money. Is it worth to do it this way and are there any reputable sellers?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Worse when engine is cold
How long has your 2009 Toyota Matrix had this problem?
A month

Hello, Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. If you can confirm there is no exhaust leak, especially before the catalytic converter, and you used original equipment Toyota parts for the oxygen sensors, then yes - it would appear that the catalyst is ineffective. As far as 3rd party catalytic converters -- you'll need to check the laws where you live. Some places, like California for example, only approve the use of genuine original equipment catalytic converters. You cannot use aftermarket ones (except in limited cases that are stipulated) nor can you use a used one. Since I cannot tell where you live exactly, I cannot speak to what is legal. So the answer is - maybe. Check with local laws and go from there.
