how do I shut off my check engine warning light

Stevieray, You've given me good advice over time. I'm not sure I understand this last piece of advice though. You first say to leave the light on? Then you say it's on for a good reason (but as I've pointed out, the light has come on a number of times and the mechanics who've looked at it, told me there wasn't a fault in the system, just in a false positive (i.e., not problem with the car, just a faulty check engine light). Had no idea it was not legal to try to turn the light off, otherwise I wouldn't have asked. So, are you saying I should have it checked out or leave it on and not worry? Thanks again. You've been quite good help. Oh, and I'm not trying to pass a smog test-- it's just annoying for this light to come on when there is nothing wrong with the car. Cheers!

WAIT!! i must have been drunk when i read your post,and then said what i did,BUT i don't drink.i COMPLETELY mis-under-stood what you were asking?ok,yes,you can disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and reconnect the cables and it will clear the light,if the light is on before unhooking the battery.or you can buy an OBDll code reader to read and/or clear any stored or pending codes and the light,from what i understand,in CA Autozone won't even read your codes anymore?.but if no codes and light is not staying on,then i don't know?just don't ever drive it if the check engine light is blinking off and on,you will quickly destroy the converter.sorry for me being so stupid,i need new glasses i recon!
