What is your question?
I just had my brake shoes replaced and the mechanic charged me a haz fee of $7. I've never seen a haz fee for parts like this in the past. Is this legit? Thanks!

Good question. In the handling of used brake pads and/or shoes they are considered hazardous waste as they may contain asbestos. Each shop independently decides how they chose to handle this material. Some pay to have them hauled away and some get paid to have them hauled away. If the fee was part of the total parts and labor quote you authorized (less sales tax) then it is perfectly legitimate. If it was added to the final bill is is not.
Agree .. Also, the hazardous materials fee can include more than just the parts, various chemicals used and disposal of - or cleaning shop towels required to complete the job at hand... It cost all legitimate repair shops to have this done, some shops 'may' just figure it in with the labor charges and don't list it separately... It usually works out to be about the same.
Thank you. I had never seen this in previous jobs, and no, it was not quoted at the beginning of the bill. Lesson learned.
